Akha Ama Coffee

Tle sips a world-class cup or two in Chiang Mai.

If you’re in Chiang Mai, you’ll want to have a local cup of coffee. Skip Starbucks. Akha Ama is the place to be. Akha Ama takes coffee so seriously they are participating in the World Coffee Feast in Vienna this year.

The open-air coffee shop has a homely atmosphere with cutesy decorations. It’s fully packed during lunch hours with foreign and Thai customers. You have to mark your order at the table before handing it over at the counter, where there’s a constant queue. Drinks are then served at your table.

Their cappuccino comes with beautiful latte art and tastes really great — strong, bitter and with creamy foam on top. Iced matcha latte, or Japanese green tea latte, is strong in both flavour and scent. Iced coffee also struck a perfect balance between bitter and sweet and wasn’t overly syrupy (many local coffee shops tend to go overboard with the sweetness).

After sampling a few drinks, I’m willing to bet that Akha Ama won’t come back home empty-handed from the World Coffee Feast this year.

Drinks start at 50 baht.

Akha Ama is located at Mata Apartment, 9/1 Hussadhisewee Road Soi 3, Changpuak, Mueang, Chiang Mai.
