Gay Americans and Their Myth

Do you know that in America, gays have a choice: either be gay or straight. Or at least, this is apparently the belief of a lot of supposedly intelligent sources spouting out ‘information’ day and night: pundits (aka talking heads), activist, news analysts, religious leaders and politicians.

To many of them, being gay is a choice many Americans pick and in doing so, kick the straight option out of their lives and their minds and their system altogether. Is that possible? To me personally, it's nice to have choices, but in this case, I don’t think it’s as simple as trying to choose between a Coke and a Pepsi.

And where and when does that super choice take place? Nobody I know seems to have experienced it. I mean, we have a lot of tendencies, but never a choice. Which brings the questions: do any of these talking heads, religious leaders and politicians make such choices, and if so, when? Do they just come upon it one fine day, where? With a button or a switch? How do we turn it on or off? Perhaps a right click somewhere to select either gay or straight? Very mysterious indeed.

Anyway, this gay-by-choice stuff has now become one of the dumbest myths following gays in America. But choice or no choice, America takes gays very seriously. Many people believe that George W. Bush won the second presidential term in 2004 by interjecting the gay issue. With the help of Karl Rove, Bush’s campaign chief architect, the Gay Marriage Amendment was introduced on the ballots to be voted on in 11 normally Republican states, which had begun to lean toward John Kerry of the Democratic Party, which was expected to support gays. Kerry lost! Let’s say, that if that’s how it really went, it means the gay issue in America managed to overpower the horror of the war going on in Iraq. That is pretty scary!

And now the gay punching bag is back and on the forefront once again. With the midterm election around the corner (November 2nd), much of the country is still mourning the suicides of 5 teenage boys unable to cope with being gay or perceived as being gay. The ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ US army’s gay policy is a ping pong ball bouncing all over the place, from the courts to the White House to the Pentagon, while politicians either cheer or jeer, depending on their party’s stance.

Frankly, it’s tiring already. Isn’t it obvious enough that the gays are here to stay, not just in America, but in this world. Get used to it, life is easier that way. It’s part of human nature. It has nothing to do with anything else, let alone the choice such as ‘to be …or not to be’ nonsense.
