Samitivej Cooking Class

We admitted ourselves to hospital and left with a healthier lifestyle.

Bangkok city dwellers are spoiled by the wide range of available food options from restaurants and food stalls. With fast and easy delivery services such as Food Panda, ChefsXP and Food by Phone, having a delicious meal without the hassle of cooking has become even more convenient. Indeed, some of us who used to cook up a storm in the kitchen are beginning to dedicate less time to it.

Yet, we all know that nothing beats an authentic, home-cooked meal, and that’s why we were happy to check out Samitivej Cooking Club’s class. It’s a monthly cooking seminar that teaches healthy recipes and, best of all, it’s free! Samitivej Cooking Club believes that awareness of healthy food leads directly to a healthier lifestyle.

Classes are held every second Thursday of every month at Samitivej Hospital in Sukhumvit Soi 49. Each session has a theme. The one I attended was ‘Food for Perfect Weight’, which was held in collaboration with Siam Organic’s Jasberry Rice. We learned that the Jasberry Lo-GI rice helps in weight control as it is full of complex carbs that get digested more slowly than simple carbs, giving you sustained energy for a longer period of time. Sodexo’s Chef Cheewin Kachendecha demonstrated how to make a Spicy & Sour Salad with ‘Calcium Fish’, Papilotte of Tilapia with roasted tomato dipping served with Jasberry Lo-GI Rice and Bircher Muesli. It was nice to be reminded how simple it can be to create a healthy meal right at home. Then there was a lucky draw that presented three winners with Jasberry rice to help get them started on their own home-cooking adventures. We’ve already learnt what it’s like to cook with Jasberry rice, and it’s quite pleasant. The whole room is filled with the scent of berries when the steam rises from the rice cooker!
