A newcomer on the scene, The Catbird Seat is already bringing alfresco drinking and dining to new heights.
There’s something seriously sexy about breezy rooftop bar and restaurant The Catbird Seat. Aptly named, the venue provides guests with a vantage point atop trendy Grass Thonglor and its stunning scenery. Lounging beneath the moonlight gets even more romantic with dreamy music playing in the background. We listened to Nouvelle Vague’s rendition of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart Again’ and felt like falling in love all over again, which we did, eventually — with the food.
With an extensive menu of French, Italian and vaguely Mediterranean fare, The Catbird Seat took us on a wonderful journey through various parts of the world. We started off the night with a glass of lychee-scented Vina Mont Gras Sauvignon from Chile that perfectly complemented our savoury fish soup starter, a concoction of blended whole Mediterranean fish with saffron, garlic croutons, gruyere and tomato aioli. We also cleared an appetiser sampler that included fresh, light tomato and mozzarella salad over arugula and a decadent beef carpaccio with lemon honey balsamic vinaigrette, shaved parmesan and grissini.
The truly noteworthy dish of the night was a surprisingly light spinach and green peas ravioli with parmesan and ricotta cheese with asparagus veloute with fresh mint. Its creamy goodness was not overpowering, nor did the dish make us feel like we had to jump on a treadmill to work it off. We also adored the grilled tiger prawns served with a side of Indian virgin oil drizzled over green mango, green beans, sliced garlic, fresh chili, mashed potato and vegetable skewer. The intricate flavours and textures were perfectly paired in this dish. Another hit was the baked duck leg confit with sautéed sliced potatoes and vegetable ratatouille, a hearty and soul-satisfying main course. When it came time for dessert we were so stuffed we went with the light but luscious panna cotta with raspberry and blueberry coulis.
At weekends, this modern restaurant and bar morphs into a full-scale lounge by night, when DJs take over the patio roof deck creating a great party atmosphere. Weekdays are better for those who want to have a relaxed evening without jostling for space.
