Chatuchak is not the only market in town, and certainly not at night. When the city’s most well-known bargain shopping site closes down another is just getting going.
Chatuchak weekend market, Sunday Market, JJ Market, they are all different names for one huge site — the famous weekend market of Thailand. This place is one hot spot for both local and tourists, and it’s also one of the top listed destinations in Bangkok for the weekend. But there’s another market that has been growing in popularity and likewise attracting a large number of visitors; some even say that it’s the night version of the Chatuchak weekend market (which closes at 6pm). Rod Fai Market, or Ta Lard Nut Rod Fai as it’s known by Thais, is a kind of after-party site for Chatuchak weekend market visitors that opens at 4pm and closes at midnight Friday to Sunday.
Rod Fai Market is located near Chatuchak Park. The atmosphere is just like a normal Thai night market but it is the stuff available that makes this place special. Here you can find beautiful furniture old and new. For sure the antiques and older home decorations will remind some Thais of childhood and for others bring back memories of days quite long ago.
The food here is great too. There are quite a number of interesting dishes and snacks. One menu that really caught my attention offered lotus rice; I tried it and was served a generous amount of filling wrapped with lotus leaf with the whole of it steamed to perfection. Walk to the end of the road to find this lotus rice stall.
The market’s layout comprises the familiar sections for clothing, plants and garden equipment, home decoration and so forth, along with the many small food stalls that are like mini pubs where alcoholic drinks are served. Light shopping followed by a drink at one of these ‘pubs’ can make for a perfect chilled-out night.
